EU Vehicle Access and Manoeuvrability

The EU have published Regulation 130/2012 which introduces type approval requirement for vehicle access and manoeuvrability into the General Safety Regulation 661/2009. Link

Part 1 deals with vehicles of N2 and N3 >7.5 tonnes and details requirements for the installation and location of steps and handholds for easy access to the vehicle.

Part 2 requires any M1 or N1 vehicles to have a running board or access step if the height of the passenger compartment is >600mm above the ground.

Annex III of the regulations requires that all vehicles be equipped with a device for reversing.

The requirements will be applicable in line with the 661/2009 timing; 01/11/2012 for new types and 01/11/2014 for all registrations.
